Some of them we forget to do but make our life in the kitchen just that little bit easier. Let me know if you have any useful tips you are happy for me to add to my list.
But before we get into those gems, why not check out my 10 Kitchen Essential Ingredients and How to Menu Plan your weekly meals which I find are great ways to keep your sanity. I do these on the weekend for the week ahead so it’s one less thing to think about.
Sharpen your knives: A sharp knife makes cooking safer and faster. Invest in a good knife sharpener and keep your knives sharp for precise and easy cutting. Find a place to keep your knives and always return them back to the same place.
Prep ahead of time: Chop vegetables, marinate meat, and measure ingredients before you start cooking. This saves time and stress during the actual cooking process! Sometimes I prep a traybake ahead of time and keep it in the fridge until ready to go in the oven
.
Make use of citrus zest: Before juicing citrus fruits, zest the outer peel. Freeze the zest in a Ziploc bag to add flavor to dishes later.
Use a paper towel to keep greens fresh: Place a dry paper towel in a bag of greens or salad to absorb excess moisture and keep them fresh for longer. If you buy them and they are wrapped in plastic, remove the outer bag as it will make the herbs/greens go soggy.
Use an ice cream scoop for consistent portions: Use an ice cream scoop for portioning cookie dough, meatballs, or even cupcake batter for uniform sizes and even cooking
Use a jar for salad dressings: Mix salad dressings directly in a jar by adding ingredients and shaking vigorously. It's easy to store and pour. Then you can just use when you need it.
Preserve Herbs: Chop fresh herbs, place them in ice cube trays, and cover with olive oil. Freeze them for future use in cooking.
Effortless Ginger Grating: Use a spoon to peel ginger easily. The spoon's edge helps remove the skin without wasting much of the ginger.
Revive Stale Bread: Sprinkle a little water on stale bread and then bake it in the oven for a few minutes. It will freshen up and become crispy again.
These kitchen hacks are the little tricks and tips that can significantly elevate your cooking experience. They're like shortcuts on the road to becoming a more efficient, creative, and resourceful chef right in the heart of your home.
